El caserío (baserri)

He oído muchas historias sobre caseríos. Algunas vienen de cuando era pequeño, pues mi familia también desciende del norte de España.
Esas impresionantes casas rurales, que se construyen desde hace 500 años, se pueden ver por Navarra, País Vasco, Cantabria, La Rioja, etc. Pero las más grandes me parece que están en el País Vasco, y es porque, además de vivienda, incluían graneros, cuadras, pajares y hasta un lagar para hacer sidra. Todo en un solo edificio.
En la actualidad la mayoría solo son viviendas, ya han perdido su carácter agrícola y ganadero de autoabastecimiento, que era la esencia del caserío.

I have heard many stories about farms. Some come from when I was a child, because my family comes from the north of Spain.
These impressive rural houses, which have been built for 500 years, can be seen in Navarra, the Basque Country, Cantabria, La Rioja, etc. But it seems to me that the largest ones are in the Basque Country, and it is because, in addition to housing, they included barns, stables, haystacks and even a wine press to make cider. All in one building.
